Introduction

The present essay argues that the consultative leadership style is the most suitable one for modern organizations.

Main body

Even though experts debate what leadership style is the most effective one, some scholars claim that it is impossible to choose only one specific style. Instead, this choice should depend on the personality of a leader, the situation, and the internal peculiarities of a company (Sethuraman & Suresh, 2014; Six, 2017). Personal experience suggests that the consultative leadership style enables modern organizations to maximize their profit and increase productivity. Still, some leaders adhere to an autocratic style.

The strong point of the consultative leadership style is that it focuses on team-building, stimulates discussion of the existing problems between subordinates and managers, promotes innovations, and raises job satisfaction among employees (Krause, Gebert, and Kearney, 2007; Chong et al., 2018). The active engagement of employees in the decision-making process is cited as a key to the success of Coca-Cola Company (Irefin & Mechanic, 2014; Maisoni, Yasri, and Abror, 2019). Nonetheless, it is challenging to ensure that the opinion expressed by every employee of such a big company will be considered, and, hence, it is challenging to avoid populism.

Some authors, such as Nayak, Mohapatmahapatro, and Mishra (2018), argue that food and processing companies might benefit from the autocratic leadership style. According to Chukwusa (2018), autocratic leadership brings success and increased productivity to any company, be it a food or a steel one, due to the ability of a leader to impose sanctions and make the most critical decision independently. Nonetheless, for Apple Computer, Inc, the autocratic rule of Steve Jobs was detrimental (Al-Khaled & Fenn, 2020).

Conclusion

To conclude, nowadays, there is a tendency toward leadership styles that are employee-oriented. Besides, the experience suggests that an autocratic leadership style might negatively affect the performance of a company. From this, it could be inferred that consultative and democratic leadership styles are the best choice for modern organizations.
