Leaders are people given the role to govern others within a country, organization, or business place. Within the area of business, there are different types of people with different personalities. Different leadership styles majorly impact how an organization performs since a good working environment can boost employee morale. Exemplary leadership will lead to higher productivity and encourage employees to become more innovative. Examples of suitable leadership methods include authoritative leadership, democratic and paternal leadership. Some may argue that good leadership will more often or not motivate employees to perform better at their jobs.

An authoritarian leader is a person who gives orders and rarely listens to the opinion of the employees. Authoritarian leaders tend to issue threats and punishments if their work is not performed as instructed (Zerwekh & Garneau, 2017, p.60-110). There is then a democratic leader who consults employees to formulate plans and encourages them to get involved in decision-making. About two years ago, we had an administrator in the office who was the authoritative type of leader. He did not care about the opinion of fellow employees, although he took full responsibility and authority over the work done. Most employees were afraid of him since he was harsh and scolded people for poor performance.

My current administrator uses paternal leadership effectively to achieve results. She is more advanced in age than most of my colleagues at work, so this method works effectively. She guides and protects her subordinates as members of her own family. This type of leadership motivates employees because they work hard because of gratitude since they are treated like family, and what child does not want to please their parents?

I want to use the laissez-faire method to give my subordinates more responsibilities and decision-making capabilities. Studies show that employees work more efficiently when not under strict supervision since this type of leadership allows them to establish their own goals and policies, thus enabling maximum efforts and positive results (“4 different types of leadership styles,” 2017). This type of leadership would encourage innovation, the personal growth of the individuals involved, and faster decision-making.
