Leadership is not about an individual but the entire group that is being led. Leadership is useless without having the people to lead. The success of an organization mainly depends on the channel of communication that is maintained by the leaders and their subordinates. Any major decision that is taken without prior consultation of the junior staff may land the entire organization in trouble.

However, experienced the leader may seem to be, he or she needs to consult with the other leaders to ensure that its activities are supported. Consultation is necessary as it may prevent the leader from having to bear the consequences of his mistakes alone. The leader should be able to trust his or her followers enough to consult them in times of crisis.

The other leaders of the organization also have a right to know the kind of transactions that are being entered into on behalf of the organization. This will make them be alert and be ready for any outcome. Most leaders that thought were making wise decisions for the company have ended up suffering alone when they fail to include the other shareholders of the company.

Motivation is an important aspect of any leadership style. A leader needs to be motivated not only by the junior staff but the other managerial leaders. The kind of support that will be extended to a leader will depend on their personality and the circumstances that led to their appointment. Most companies will prefer to make a replacement from within the company and not outside.

There are very few external leaders that are granted support by the existing staff if they have been appointed from outside. Most boards of directors may go for external leaders basically because they want to completely change the face of the organization. It, however, becomes even tougher for the company when the rest of the employees resist them and hence do not give them the necessary support. An external leader can, however, receive support from the existing management if they show a desirable personality.

A leader is supposed to show his or her colleagues that he is not there to not mainly impose rules but to work hand in hand with them. Leaders who want to prove to their colleagues that they have all the credentials to qualify for a certain position may be denied the support simply to show them that they can do nothing without the support of their juniors.
